Preparation for Independence – York Region

The Preparation for Independence program increases adolescents' self-sufficiency, including:

  • Helping youth understand the responsibilities involved in living independently
  • Individual skill development, such as the use of community resources, personal safety, employment and housing search, budgeting, and better health. We also offer support for students to stay in or return to school
  • Development of coping, problem-solving, communication, decision making, anger management, and conflict resolution skills

Each program is tailored to the individual, and experienced youth workers meet participants in the community as required. This short-term service ranges from a few meetings to regular contact for six-months, and youth are linked to appropriate follow-up services as needed.

Youth 15 to 19 living in York Region may refer themselves to the program, or be referred by parents, teachers, health professionals, CAS workers, or other service providers.
