Job Posting: Board of Directors

Organization Overview

Youthdale Treatment Centres is a leading non-profit and charitable community agency dedicated to serving children, youth, and families from diverse backgrounds and communities across Ontario struggling with complex mental health needs. We work collaboratively through active partnerships between the agency, youth, and families to create meaningful engagement and effective treatment, resulting in positive outcomes.

Youthdale’s Values

The success of an organization stems from a team that is aligned with its mission and vision, where decisions are made in the best interests of the clients they serve and the marginalized and vulnerable populations across our communities. Through this effort, all team members embrace their role in the organization with respect and dignity for all stakeholders. Through these partnerships, everyone is focused on ensuring a commitment and responsibility toward anti-racism, anti-oppression, equity, diversity, inclusivity, and belonging.

Role Overview

The Board of Directors has overall responsibility for the governance of Youthdale Treatment Centres. The board has two primary responsibilities: decision making and oversight. The board’s decision making function is primarily focused on the development of a strategic plan, as well as approval of significant decisions facing the organization. Such decisions include:

  • succession planning;

  • strategic direction;

  • financial matters;

  • resource allocation; and

  • other similar matters.

The oversight function includes:

  • the review of financial reports;

  • ensuring there are adequate systems and controls in place to ensure quality
    care;

  • overseeing the risk management program;

  • overseeing and advising the organization’s executives and senior
    management;

  • ensuring regulatory and ethical compliance; and

  • monitoring the implementation of strategic policies.

The Board of Directors is comprised of between 9 and 15 elected members at any given time. The Board meets at least approximately 8 times per year. The Nominating and Governance Committee nominates a person to fill board vacancies from time to time. As part of our nominating and selection process we strive to ensure that our board membership is comprised of individuals who reflect the breadth, depth and diversity of the community we serve, as well as providing a range of skill sets and professional backgrounds to allow for a broad complement of expertise and perspectives.

Board Members’ Responsibilities include:

  1. Attending regular meetings which are approximately two hours in duration;

  2. Providing expertise to committees of the board – each board member is
    expected to serve as an active, ongoing member of at least one committee;

  3. Being well prepared for board meetings by reading materials provided in board package prior to attending each meeting;

  4. Acting and making decisions that are in the best interest of Youthdale as a
    whole, without being solely accountable to any one specific group or interest;

  5. Participating in a Board orientation program and in ongoing Board
    development activities; and

  6. Receiving and acting upon the results of Board evaluations in a positive and
    constructive manner.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Bring to Youthdale their specific skills, expertise, backgrounds, attributes, and community relationships that benefit the community served by Youthdale;

  2. Represent the board and Youthdale in the community when asked to do so by
    the Board Chair;

  3. Develop and maintain sound relations and work cooperatively and respectfully with the Board Chair, members of the Board and senior management; and

  4. Be knowledgeable of and comply with the policies that are applicable to the Board.
